I chose to research the food and culture of Slovenia because of my
ethnic background. I do not know much about this country, so I would like to do
more research on where I come from. All that I know so far is that Slovenia is
a small country in Europe. After furthering my knowledge through the Internet,
I now know that Slovenia is located in Western Europe neighboring Austria and
Hungary. Since about 800 A.D Slovenia has been under control by Germany as part
of the Holy Roman, Austrian, and Austro-Hungarian empires. Then after World War
II, Slovenia was divided among German, Italian, and Hungarian powers. It was
not until 1991 when Slovenia gained independence from Germany. Slovenian food
is influenced by it’s surrounding countries. The German cuisine, consisting of
heavy meats and starches, has carried over to the Slovenian food culture. Since
this small country is not ideal to produce crops, most of their basic food is
imported. A vast majority of Slovenian meals are cooked with cream, such as
their soups. One of the specialty meals in Slovenia is horseradish with cream,
usually served with a beef dish. Since countries all over influence the meals
of Slovenia, there are a variety of different things to eat, and the people
never go hungry. Having a meal with a friend or family is a great social event
for the people in Slovenia, making food an important aspect of bringing people
together.

I was really interested when you chose to do this country because it's not one that people would normally choose. I'm very interested to learn more about this culture and I can't wait to try some food!
