The country I chose to focus on is France. I decided to learn more about french food and how it affects their culture because I took French for seven years and felt like there is a lot to be learned from their style of living. I am already familiar with some of their basic eating habits but would like to learn more about the reasoning behind them. The French population really values their meals, especially lunch. Each day, people spend about two hours over lunch. In many towns, everything except for restaurants close down from noon to 2 p.m. so that they have time to enjoy and savor their meals. There are four main types of French food. Classical French cuisine consists of primarily cream-based dishes. Haute cuisine is a very sophisticated type of meal in which presentation is very important. Nouvelle cuisine is the simpler type of meal with smaller portions. Finally, Cuisine du terrior is mostly focused on regional specialties. Almost all french meals are served with baguettes, cheese, and then wine for the adults. Due to France’s rich soil, they have fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, grains, and meat almost all year long. This helps provide healthier meal options. Since the Atlantic Ocean is located to the west and the Mediterranean Sea is to the southeast, France is also known for its wide variety for seafood. Although French food seems very lavish and extravagant, it wasn’t always that way. Before the 20th century, most of the population dealt with poverty and malnutrition. It wasn’t until later that French meals became the way they are today.
