China - Blog Post #3 - Myles Fiascone - April 19, 2015





Traditional Chinese food consists of to parts: a starch or carbohydrate like rice or noodles and a dish of vegetables, fish, or meat. In China's past, the overpopulation of the country has caused their food to be the way it is. Since meat was scarce, they would put a small serving of meat with rice or noodles. Although rice is a critical part of Chinese cuisine, it may not be served sometimes especially at formal occasions. It may then be served at the end when no dishes remained. Mostly, however, soup will be served after the meal to completely satisfy one's appetite. Deserts are much more rarely served in the Chinese culture. Instead, foods like deserts are served during the meal without making much distinction. If desert is served, the most typical dishes are fresh fruit such as oranges or a type of sweet soup made with beans and sugar.In Chinese culture cold drinks with a hot meal are said to be bad or digestion so most drinks will either be tea or hot water, if any drink is served. Tea is also thought to help digest greasy foods.

  1. I have never realized that desserts were purposly not very commonly served in China so I found that piece of information very interesting. Also I enjoy how their culture drink hot drinks with their meals, they relate to France because they care more about healthy habits rather than taste and eating for pleasure.
