Greek Food and Greek Lifestyle Blog Post #4 April 19, 2015 By Barbara Ramont

Greece used to be one of the healthiest countries in the world. Back this the 1950’s people would walk to the markets, buy produce, and cook home cooked meals each night. However, now lots of thing have changed. Here are some reasons: people moved to the big cities and started eating fast food instead of traditional Mediterranean food. Another reason is that the Greeks, especially the older generation, thinks that a healthy person has to be a little heavy. They say a child that has a little bit of a belly is a healthy one. Another fact, and an important one, Greeks are less active than they used to be. More money, more cars, less time has lead to less activity. From a source that I found, 20 years ago, large supermarkets with parking lots were not very common, shopping was done on a daily basis on foot from the local open market and the local grocery store, even in big cities. Today cars are used for every little errand.

I know that these facts seem negative for Greece, but this is happening to other parts of the world too. We see the same thing happening in Latin America, and, of course, the United States of America. I am not worried about the people in Greece because they still have so many great and healthy recipes to choose from! The overall food and culture in Greece is still beautiful, even though the population has strayed form all traditional food all of the time. I feel that Greek still has a lot to offer!

  1. It almost sad to see the shift that is being done from walking to the markets to driving to the grocery stores. I also found it very interesting what the Greek perception of a healthy person is, and how that differs to the perception of what is healthy in the U.S. Nonetheless I see a lot of similarities of the Greek and American culture.

  2. It's rather sad to see such a thriving and healthy place to almost crumble under the advances of society. I don't know much about Greece but this was very informative background information i will definitely remember!
