Greek Food: this Use of Spices and Herbs! Blog Post #3 April 19, 2015 By Barbara Ramont

Greece is known for its exquisite food! Greece has many types of foods, that don’t seem adventuresome, but they are delicious! One interesting dish that Greece is famous for is called Dakos. Dakos consists mainly of a slice of soaked dried bread or barley Rusk. This is then topped with chopped tomatoes and crumbled feta or mizithra cheese, plus olives and after flavored with herbs such as dried oregano. This is one dish that demonstrate the Greek use of spices and herbs in their cooking. The Greeks use lots of salt, herbs, and spices in their food. This may not seem like a lot of additions to taste, but it makes all the difference! In Greece, the Athens central market has lots of venders selling the herbs and spices. They sell these of the street, and some markets are even known for specializing in certain herbs.

Greek also is home to a common dessert called Baklava. Baklava is most commonly linked to the Greek people. This dessert will please most people who stumble upon it! This is especially for people who enjoy nuts to flavor their desserts. Baklava is filled with both walnuts and almonds. This is part of what makes it such a unique dessert. Baklava is made with flaky phyllo dough, and has a cinnamon-spiced nut filling, and covered in sweet syrup. Once backed, it has a crunchy and sweet taste to it. This dish is so common in Greece, that people consider it the go to dessert. Each family adds their own special ingredients to Baklava. These recipes have been pasted down from generation to generation.

  1. Looks great! The salt, herbs, and spices that the Greeks are known for must add to the exquisite taste. Also I love the idea of the tradition of the Baklava dessert holds. It seems similar to an apple or pumpkin pie, how everyone has they're own special way of cooking it!
