Meat is a very large part of a southern American's diet. The meat primarily ate by southerns is pork, beef, and chicken. These meats can be easily prepared into many dishes or skillfully crafted into others. One southern staple that applies to all three meats is the classic barbecue. Barbecue has very different tastes and textures as you go state to state. A major reason why southern Americans eat so much meat is because in the early days of the United States and the Thirteen Colonies the south was the main provider of cattle, hogs, and chicken to the northern colonies.

I enjoyed how you brought history into the decision of the south to consume a large amount of meat. It is true some parts of the country couldn't cultivate such a successful farm, so they would need to rely on livestock for food. They perfected their art to make it the best tasting food possible.
ReplyDeleteI think it's really unique that something that comes from the same region and called the same thing can be so different. I also was not aware that the south provided so much livestock for the northern colonies. I think the great draw of barbeque is that it is different everywhere you go. It's cool that you can go state to state and expect a different taste every time.
ReplyDeleteI did not know how important the south was on the meat industry to the colonies. It's cool to learn of how barbecue is different from every state. I like how each state puts their own spin on making their barbecue and I hope to try all the different styles.
