Health in France - Blog Post #4 - April 15, 2015

Although the French tend to use rich flavoring and large amounts of bread with their meals, they are actually among the lowest obesity rates in the world.  That being said, throughout the past 10 years their obesity rate has been steadily increasing.  About 30% of their saturated fat comes from butter which is a major component of most of their recipes.  For the amount of high-fat foods they eat, the French surprisingly have very few health issues related to their diet.  Many scientists claim that the reasoning behind this is red wine.  Also, fresh food markets are a very big aspect of the French culture which would contribute to their overall health.  In the 1960’s and 70’s, French chiefs decided to start a movement known as the Nouvelle cuisine to try to create lighter and healthier meals.  After realizing that unhealthiness in their cooking, they wanted to make a change.  However, many people didn’t want to stray from their original eating habits.  Although the French love indulging in sweets and lavish food, they also keep up their good health.
