Holidays In Greece

Greece is not much different from the United States when it comes to holidays and feasts. Like us, Easter and Christmas are two important holidays to the Greeks. While most people practice the religion of Greek Orthodox, their customs and traditions are still very similar to ours. Holy week is followed by Easter. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday are all part of their Easter season. It is celebrated and honored with various festivals/parties, and large feasts shared with close friends and families. The Christmas season in Greece consists of 40 days of fasting. However, Christmas trees are not a trend in Greece like it is in the U.S. In most of the homes of the Greeks, the main symbol of Christmas is a wooden bowl, with wire suspended around its rim. A cross wrapped in basil hangs  around the wire of the bowl. On Christmas day, families exchange a small amount of gifts, and donate more to charities and orphanages.  People also gather together at a special holiday table, and feast on Figs served with spicy golden Chrisopsomo bread.  These traditions are an important part in the Greek culture.

  1. I had very limited knowledge on Greece before reading your blogs. I like this one because I think it's interesting that the United States has so much in common with them. I liked reading about the customs and traditions that they participate in and learning more about their holidays.
