Taste of Deutschland~Blog Post #1~ April 12, 2015

The culture I chose to focus on is Germany. I am interested in this culture because most of my family is German and they are very devoted to the culture and I feel this project can give more knowledge of the different traditions. I am aware of the wide variety of foods that Germany has to offer, whether it is leberkase, schnitzel, or  baumkuchen for dessert. I feel that there is much more to learn about and study that is involved with this culture. I hope to learn how food has evolved over the centuries and how it has changed. Traditional German food differs from every area in Germany. This is because Germany was once separated into many territories and these territories soon developed there own type of food and culture. The Germans have been known for their variety of sausages and bread. In history meat was an essential to the German diet because there was not much to be grown in the rural areas because of the mountainous geography, so people relied on animals as a source of food. One of the things that was able to be grown in the were rye and wheat. Because these were a main source of crops, many different types of breads were able to be made. To preserve food, Germans would salting, smoking, curing or pickling. This is still seen in the most common German foods. German food has not changed much over the years, German cuisine still includes food that dates back from centuries ago.

  1. I'm very intrigued on how Germany split into many different cultures. I'm surprised with such familiar land they created different types of foods. Also, it is very interesting on how they preserved their meats. Because they were a culture dependent on animals, they must have perfected the preservation process.

  2. I finding very interesting that the cuisine has not changed much over the years. It seems most cultures do evolve with modern day techniques. That is why it is impressive that they can still use the same preservation process they did all those years ago!

  3. I thought it was very interesting that the food of Germany changes as you move about the country. I also found it cool that the German cuisine hasn't changed much over the years.
