Get to know Greece! -Blog Post #1- April 12, 2015 By Barbara Ramont

Welcome to Greece! Here in Greece the climate is typically Mediterranean-wet winters, and dry summers-with the exception of the mountains-which are snowy. Greece is a country that is surrounded to the North by Bulgaria, the Republic of Macedonia and Albania. When you look to the West, the Ionian Sea surrounds Greece, and the Mediterranean Sea is located South of Greece. Lastly, the Aegean Sea and Turkey border it in the East.

Through this whole researching process, I hope to learn a lot more about the Greek culture. From my prior knowledge, I know that the Greek people eat a large Mediterranean diet. This means that a large part of what they eat is fresh ingredients from markets and from what the fisherman gather from the Sea. Also, in the Greek culture they use many spices mixed with meats to get the best possible taste in their food. One interesting fact about the foods in Greece is that types of food such as olives, garlic, lemons, and herbs have become the main ingredients or seasonings to many foods, which give Greek food its unique flavor. The next fact that I found interesting is that Coffee is the most popular drink in Greece. They even have created special coffee shops to accommodate the demands. Lastly, Greeks use many Sauces in their cooking. Once sauce is called bechamel this is a white sauce made from flour, butter, milk and eggs, and it is used for the topping on the classic dish of Moussaka.
