French Cuisine ~Blog Post #1~ April 12, 2015 by Sarah Koesser

Bonjour! I am blogging excitedly about the sophisticated and flavorful French Cuisine. The wide range of rich foods alone is a great reason to blog about this country but the main reason I chose French Cuisine is because I am planning on traveling to France this summer and decided this was a great opportunity to explore their culture. I hope to familiarize myself with the most popular and classic dishes in France so when I arrive I am well educated. I already do know a few things about French food which are that it’s very rich, resulting in being served in smaller proportions. I also know that neither of my two favorite dishes, french toast and french fries, actually originated from France. Some interesting facts about French Cuisine are that France is considered the country to consume the most cheese in the world. The most popular French bread is ‘la baguette’ meaning little stick, It is a loaf about 5 or 6 cm wide and up to a metre in length. Before eating a meal, the French believe it is polite to say “Bon Appétit” which translates to ‘good appetite.’ By saying “Bon appétit!” you are wishing everybody 'a good appetite' so that they will enjoy their meal. France is located in Western Europe and borders the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean. To the west is the Bay of Biscay, to the north is the English Channel and the North Sea. France’s access to water and fish have shaped their cuisine, as well as their fertile soil that provides fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, grains, and meat, nearly year-round.

  1. I like how your passion about this culture of food is really coming out. Although I never knew what it truly meant, I have heard and have used the phrase "Bon Appetit" often. That was a nice piece of information that I received from this.
