Celebrating German Style~Blog #2~ April 12, 2015

The German culture makes sure to emphasize the holiday seasons. One of the most popular days of celebration is German Unity Day. This day celebrates the day Germany was unified as a whole in 1990, so this is a more recent holiday. This is celebrated on October 3rd and it is the last day of Oktoberfest. During German Unity Day, foods are presented from all the regions of Germany and people attend concerts with traditional German music. This music consists of polka or folk music. Popular food items include Schnitzel, which is thin pieces of either chicken or pork that is covered with flour and egg, then deep fried. A slice of lemon will then be sprinkled over it. Many people eat it because it is easy to make and tastes very good. You can also find countless amounts of sausages at these festivals, with over 1,500 types in existence. Beer is also very popular at these events and there is plenty to go around. Christmas is an very important time in Germany. A popular drink includes Glühwein, which is spiced wine. Popular food items include having duck, goose, rabbit, or a roast. For dessert people will eat fruit cake Plätzchen, which is a traditional cookie. A popular tradition the Germans developed is Krampus Nacht which takes place on December 6th. Men dress up in demonic costumes in order to scare children into good behavior and on December 25th is when St. Nicholas to deliver the presents. Having festivals is important part of the German lifestyle and many people have a great time during them.

  1. It is very interesting how the many different sections of Germany were able to come together. After such a long time of separation, one might think the reunion would be a clash instead of a party. I am fascinated how they are able to combine their differences into a fun festival. Also, I enjoy how though they are now different, they all kept their deeply rooted traditions.

  2. I like how everyone is able to come together. It seemed like everyone was so deeply culturally different. It's nice that they really enjoy their holidays together, I that plays into why their culture is to strong. I also love the idea of the dressing like demons to scare the children. I think it make the Santa Clause idea so much more real for the kids.
