A Taste in the Land of Heritage ~Blog Post #1~ April 12, 2015 by: Simone Guio

Hello! I will be focusing on the culture in Poland and their traditional foods. I am interested in this culture because my grandpa is part polish and we always have polish food at family gatherings. Some things I know about Poland is a few dishes that are part of their culture including pierogi, golabki, and placki. These dishes are always served for my family but I want to know more about the food that is part of the polish culture. I also want to know more about the history of the food in Poland and how it’s changed over the years. Some interesting facts about the Poland culture is that they don’t have dinner until the afternoon around 1 or 2 p.m.. Soups are also very popular in Poland ranging from beet soup to soup with potatoes and vegetables. Poland’s taste in cuisine is very much influenced by the geography and history of the country. Poland’s location tends to get very cold winters because of this they ate foods that were easy to preserve during the cold season. These foods included vegetables, fruits, and fish, which can be preserved from up to 3-4 months. Poland is also known for having large areas of forest in history influencing the taste for Sylvan fruits. These sylvan fruits are wild strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, wild blackberries, and many more. Not only was the geography an influence on traditional polish food but politics and history also played a role in tradition as well. During wars, Poland lost access to the Baltic Sea, which was the location for saltwater fish. Now, freshwater fishes are a huge part of tradition for Poland. Since the country is one of the biggest in the continent of Europe, many nations come to Poland. As a result, Poland’s cuisine is influenced by the tradition of many other countries including Germany and Austro-Hungary. I have already learned so much from researching the history of Poland and I’m excited to learn more.
